Eligible STAS (School Transport Assistance Scheme) students who qualify for assistance receive government-funded travel to their nearest state school or designated school.
Eligible students who attend a school other than their nearest or designated school may need to pay a 'top up' fare based on the extra distance travelled. These top up fares are dependent on the bus operator.
Fares have been reduced on the Translink network across Queensland. All regional urban bus services and bus, ferry, tram and rail services in South East Queensland offer 50 cent fares.
For other government-funded services throughout Queensland, STAS students who choose to travel beyond their nearest state school may be required to pay a top up fare.
This School Transport Maximum Cash Fare Schedule sets out the maximum fare that can be charged. Some service providers may charge less than the maximum fare. Contact your local service provider for their fare schedule.
If space permits on a bus, non-STAS students may also travel at the discretion of the service provider. The maximum cash fare schedule also applies to fares for these students.

A new School Transport Maximum Cash Fare Schedule will come into effect on Tuesday 27 January 2026.
