From Monday 27 April until late 2026, work will be undertaken to replace the lift that services platforms 5/6 at Central station.

If you rely on the lift, you will not be able to use platforms 5/6 during this time.

As part of these works, the two escalators that service the platform will also be upgraded. The work will be staged so that only one escalator is out of service at a time.

Sunday travel will be impacted differently due to routine track maintenance.

Read the information below to minimise disruption to your journey.

Street entry to Central train station

Travel arrangements

If your train normally arrives or departs from platforms 5/6 at Central station and you rely on the lift, you may need to change your travel.

Travel to either Roma Street or Fortitude Valley stations, then choose one of the following options:

Travel by train

Board a service that arrives at a different Central station platform:

  • Roma Street: Doomben, Shorncliffe, Ferny Grove, Airport lines.
  • Fortitude Valley: Beenleigh, Gold Coast, Cleveland lines.

These lines usually stop at the other Central station platforms but might use platforms 5/6 due to operational issues. Please check with station staff or your train guard before boarding.

Travel by bus

Catch a bus from platform 2 at Roma Street busway station to King George Square or Queen Street bus stations.

To leave from Central station, you can:

  • catch any train from Central to Roma Street or Fortitude Valley stations, then transfer to your intended service
  • catch a bus from platform 1 at King George Square station to Roma Street busway station, then transfer to your train service.

Sunday travel

Routine inspections of inner-city tracks and tunnels occur each weekend as part of the regular maintenance program.

On Sundays, inspections take place on the lines that normally arrive at platforms 1/2 and 3/4 at Central station. During these inspections, all trains use platforms 5/6.

Inspections run from first service until approximately 4:30pm

If you rely on the platforms 5/6 lift, you will not be able to use Central station during these times.

Please note, inspections often finish earlier than 4:30pm. When they do, services resume on platforms 1, 2, 3 and 4.

To avoid unnecessary transfers, speak with station staff or your train guard before boarding to find out which platform your train will use.

If you're travelling during Sunday inspections, you can:

  • catch a train to Roma Street station, then transfer to:
    • a bus from Roma Street busway station to King George Square (like the M1 or M2) to complete your journey to the city
    • the dedicated shuttle bus, which runs from first service until approximately 4:30pm each Sunday
      • during scheduled track works, regular railbus services will replace the dedicated shuttle bus.
Shuttle bus stops
  • Central station: Edward Street, near the Ann Street intersection
  • Roma Street station: Long distance coach terminal, near platform 10
