Gold Coast residents and visitors can now use Smart Ticketing to pay for their travel on all local public transport services, with the new ways to pay system now available on Kinetic Gold Coast buses.

Home to the Smart Ticketing revolution, the Gold Coast welcomed the new payment method back when it was first introduced to the tram network.

The activation of Smart Ticketing on Gold Coast buses completes the full rollout in the region and allows customers to pay using a credit card, debit card, smartphone, or smart watch.

With 50c fares for all customers now permanent on all Translink networks, and the flexibility of Smart Ticketing, Gold Coast public transport users can seamlessly transition across local bus, tram and train connections using Smart Ticketing payment options.

The Gold Coast joins Logan, Redlands, Moreton Bay, Sunshine Coast and Ipswich as the SEQ regions with full Smart Ticketing availability.

Customers are embracing the new ways to pay, with more than 25 per cent of customers using services with Smart Ticketing now using the technology. This is expected to increase when the SEQ public transport network gets full coverage.

Of the 26 million trips taken using the technology since the roll out began in late 2020, more than 1.6 million were taken within the last month alone.

The full rollout of Smart Ticketing across all Translink public transport operators in SEQ is on track to be completed with the final and largest bus operator, Transport for Brisbane, to be activated shortly.

Head of Translink, Dr Deborah Hume said the expansion of Smart Ticketing onto the Gold Coast buses means it has never been easier for customers to use public transport in the region, with new payment methods and cheap public transport fares.

“With Smart Ticketing now providing a seamless payment system when transferring between all public transport services on the Gold Coast, we anticipate Gold Coast locals and visitors to further embrace this easy way to pay.

“We welcome Kinetic Gold Coast to the Smart Ticketing trial. I would like to thank them for their efforts and working so closely with us to make Smart Ticketing available to their many customers.”
