Free travel for New Year’s revellers

Free public transport and extra public transport services on New Year’s Eve will help revellers welcome in 2019.

All public transport on TransLink’s South East Queensland network is fare-free from 8.00pm on New Year’s Eve until 5.30am on New Year’s Day.

TransLink’s Executive Director of Operations Jasmine Green said there would be extra train, ferry and bus services, including additional NightLink buses, to ensure there were plenty of options for customers to get to and from their New Year’s celebrations.

“Free travel arrangements are in place once again this year and I’d encourage as many people as possible to take advantage of TransLink’s free public transport to get home safely,” Ms Green said.
“New Year’s Eve is a popular time for getting out and celebrating with our friends and family and planning ahead will allow many to leave the car at home.

“TransLink works with our public transport delivery partners to help meet travel demand during this period and especially before and after the fireworks.”

Customers using public transport to come into the city for the New Year celebrations, and returning home again afterward, should be aware there are a number of shuttle bus options and other changes across the network and they should check the TransLink website for details.

“There are additional high frequency BUZ bus routes running from about 8.40pm onward until about 1.40am with all extra services listed in the TransLink journey planner to allow customers to plan their ride home,” Ms Green said.

“Shuttle buses offer respite from the crowds leaving all at once on services using the busway, with shuttles running outbound to Carindale and Eight Mile Plains leaving from Ann St stop 10 in the city; near Brisbane City Hall, opposite the Albert Street Uniting Church.”

Queensland Rail will also run additional services for customers celebrating New Year’s Eve in the city. Extra trains will depart from South Brisbane, South Bank and Roma Street stations to destinations across the South East after the 8.30pm and midnight fireworks.

Brisbane River ferry services will experience some minor disruptions between 8.20pm and 1.15am due to the fireworks displays.
