Changes are coming to Cairns Sunbus services next month that will benefit both customers and bus drivers.

Head of TransLink Matthew Longland said from Monday 19 June a new timetable would be introduced, which would result in minor changes to bus routes in the CBD, with buses servicing new bus stops at Cairns Central Shopping Centre and Florence Street.

“Cairns is a growing city and these timetable changes will better reflect current road and network conditions, improving reliability for passengers,” Mr Longland said.

“All services from Cairns CBD (except route 133) will now start their journeys from Spence Street and all inbound services will terminate within the Cairns Central Shopping Centre precinct.

“These changes are linked with a new bus driver facility with construction scheduled to start in June.

“The $150,000 facility will enable Sunbus drivers to be closer to the start of their route after their breaks. This will make the network more efficient to operate.”

Mr Longland said terminating services within the Cairns Central Shopping Centre precinct would also provide a more accessible and comfortable location for customers.

“As part of the changes, two new bus stops have been built on Florence Street to provide access to the Performing Arts Centre and Munro Martin Parklands, and bus stops on McLeod Street will be removed,” he said.

“New timetables will be available from TransLink and Sunbus in early June.

“TransLink staff will be at Cairns Central Shopping Centre on Saturday 17 June to answer questions and provide assistance.”
