Queensland Government assistance
The School Transport Assistance Scheme (STAS) is a state-wide government initiative that provides school transport assistance to eligible students. It is administered by the School Transport division of the Department of Transport and Main Roads.
STAS is a school fares subsidy that is calculated based on either the distance between an eligible student's school and residence, or on household income under the safety net provision.
Contact the Department of Transport and Main Roads if you have questions about STAS, or want to download the application form.
Top up fares
Students who attend a school other than their nearest state school may need to pay a 'top up' fare based on the extra distance travelled. The STAS top up level is not based on the TransLink zones; it is calculated by bus operators when they issue STAS travel passes, based on the information supplied in each application.
Top up fares increase every two years. The next top up fare increase is due for the 2014 school year.

How to apply
Information about how to apply is on the Department of Transport and Main Roads website.
School travel passes are issued by the bus operators. Once an application for a new, or renewal of an existing, STAS pass is approved by the Department of Transport and Main Roads, students must contact their relevant bus operator to be issued with a travel pass.
