TransLink operates services across 23 zones in South East Queensland and 11 zones in Cairns.

In South East Queensland the zone system works in a circular pattern, with zone 1 starting in Brisbane CBD and working its way north to the Sunshine Coast and Gympie, south to the Gold Coast and west out to Helidon.

In Cairns the CBD is within a special zone (20) with 10 zones extending to Palm Cove in the north, Gordonvale in the South and west to Redlynch.

Fares are calculated at either an adult or concession rate and based on the number of zones you travel through during your journey.

Working out your fare

South East Queensland

To calculate your fare, look at the zones you travel through during your journey. Subtract the lowest zone you will be travelling in, from the highest zone, then add one. This formula calculates the correct number of zones you will be charged.

You can also use the journey planner to calculate the fare for a specific journey.

Fare examples:

  • If you are travelling between Ipswich (zone 7) and Fortitude Valley (zone 1), you would pay a seven zone fare because you are travelling through zones seven, six, five, four, three, two and one (7-1+1 = 7 zones).
  • If you are travelling from Morayfield (zone 8) to Strathpine (zone 5), you would pay a four zone fare because you are travelling though zones eight, seven, six and five (8-5+1 = 4 zones).

Zone boundaries

Some bus stops and train stations are located on a zone boundary, so they have two zones (for example, Burpengary is zone 7/8). This means that when you travel towards Brisbane you use the lower zone to calculate your fare and when travelling away from Brisbane you use the higher zone.

Fares are based on the number of zones crossed.

To calculate the correct number of zones and ticket price, look at the zone map to identify your start and finish zone for journey, and then refer to the fare zone calculator and current fares.

Please note: Travel to or from one 20 is treated as an additional zone.
