What is the Capalaba park 'n' ride project?
The Capalaba park 'n' ride is part of TransLink's $48 million Station Upgrade Program. The new facility will provide bayside residents with an alternative to car travel and boost the amount of park 'n' ride spaces available for local residents.
The new facility will be delivered in two stages, with Stage 1 providing parking for around 210 cars. Parking for a further 100 vehicles will be provided in Stage 2, with construction dependent on demand and funding allocations. In the interim, the vacant land allocated for Stage 2 will be utilised for temporary bus storage (overnight layover) to improve network efficiency.
The new park 'n' ride will provide:
- parking for approximately 210 cars in stage 1
- up to a further 100 spaces in stage 2
- a comfortable waiting area with high quality shelters and seating for passengers
- drop off and pick-up areas - known as kiss 'n' rides
- a safe parking area with security cameras and lighting
- improved access for pedestrians and cyclists, including bicycle storage
- four disabled parking bays
- a temporary bus storage area for improved network efficiency
- bus driver's facilities
- road works to allow safe and efficient access to the park 'n' ride from Moreton Bay Road
- prioritised traffic signalling on Moreton Bay Road for buses.

Why is it needed?
The existing park 'n' ride near the Capalaba bus station at Noeleen Street is at capacity. Many bus customers are currently parking on local streets and within the Capalaba Central and Capalaba Park shopping centre car parks to access public transport. The new Capalaba park 'n' ride will cater for commuter parking needs in the area - providing a safe, central, and convenient facility for commuters to park their car and transfer to a bus - while minimising parking demand on local streets and facilities.
The Old Cleveland Road corridor from Buranda to Capalaba has been identified in the TransLink Network Plan (TNP) as a "primary corridor" likely to experience high growth in public transport.
To meet this demand, the Queensland Government has committed to plan and gradually build the Eastern Busway on the Old Cleveland Road corridor, with the newest section of the Eastern Busway from Burandah to Main Avenue, Coorparoo open in August 2011.
Ultimately, the Eastern Busway will provide Capalaba with high-frequency services to the city and opportunities to interchange at key destinations serviced by rail or other busways.
The staged implementation approach is proposed to include:
- a dedicated busway from Main Avenue in Coorparoo to Capalaba
- improved bus services with a mix of high-frequency bus services between the Eastern Region and Brisbane City
- bus lanes on Old Cleveland Road
- priority at intersections for buses (e.g. bus jumps)
- improved bus stations and stops.
One of the key actions under the TNP is to construct park 'n' ride facilities at key locations on the outer ends of public transport corridors to help support the predicted increase in demand for public transport.
What are the benefits?
The Capalaba park 'n' ride will allow people to park their cars and transfer to a bus to complete their journey, encouraging more people to use public transport for most of their journey.
The benefits of the park 'n' ride include:
- increased capacity for commuter car parking for the bayside community
- safe, high-quality passenger waiting facilities
- reduced parking demand on local streets and on the Capalaba Central and Capalaba Park shopping centre car parks
- encouraging public transport use to help reduce traffic congestion and greenhouse gas emissions
- proactively cater for people's future transport needs.
The park 'n' ride will encourage public transport use to help reduce traffic congestion in the area - one full bus=40 fewer cars.
How will this affect me?
Services
Construction works will not impact existing services.
TransLink regularly reviews services across the network. If service changes are planned for the new park 'n' ride, passengers will be informed at least two weeks before.
Traffic
Lane closures and speed reductions may be required.
Signage and traffic controllers will direct road users around construction works as required.
We aim to keep disruptions to a minimum where possible.
Construction
During construction, some noise and dust can be expected.
We will inform the community prior to the work commencing.
